If you have to sell your shit on eBay, because you’re a fashion blogger, the trend is over and you need to pay off your credit card debt to buy more outfits, you should be gassed. Anything you buy these days has a carbon footprint. Mass-consumption is unsustainable. Particularly when it comes to “fashion”. The textile industry is one of the biggest polluters on the planet. Just because something is expensive or designer doesn’t make it ethical or ecological. Spend more and consume less. Think about price per wear. If you buy something for $10 and only wear it once, it is $10 per wear. If you buy something for $300 and wear it 300 times it is $1 per wear. In the 1970s the average American spent $4000 of their annual income on clothing and bought less. Now, we spend less than $1,200. However, 80% of the textile jobs are now overseas in places that have no rights for workers, environmental standards or equal pay for women. Being cheap comes at a price; not only to our environment but to other humans. Polyester looks like shit, causes cancer and hormonal disruptions and pollutes the ocean. Invest in organic, natural fabrics like; silk, organic cotton, wool, cashmere. They last longer, look better, and don’t make you smell disgusting. This isn’t some unintellectual rant. This is coming from someone with a degree in fashion design that has spent over 10 years researching sustainability. If you buy from “fast fashion” you are supporting pollution, depletion of natural resources, and human rights violations. Forget fashion; buy stuff that fits, is made of good fabric, and will last at least a year or more with heavy use and little washing/drycleaning (that also uses resources). Wear deodorant and don’t be an asshole. This is my holiday gift to everyone; this rant for the planet. Make a difference and don’t be a cheap piece of shit. Please share.
